The Engineering Library is committed to supporting the research and teaching needs of the 12 schools, 3000 undergraduates, 1300 graduate, 230 faculty, staff, and the many multidisciplinary research centers associated with the College of Engineering.
The Engineering Library liaisons are Jill Powell, Jeremy Cusker, Leah Solla, and Steven Rockey,. They are assigned to several departments each and listed in the table below. Faculty, staff, and students are important partners in helping us build the collection, and are encouraged to contact the liaisons regarding any suggestions or questions. All engineering disciplines, computing and information science, and the geological sciences at the undergraduate and graduate level are included. Size is approximately 300,000 print volumes with another 100,000 volumes and 2 million technical reports in the Library Annex. Steven Rockey, swr1@cornell.edu, is Director of the Engineering and Mathematics Libraries and welcomes your suggestions.
Journal Cancellations, see this page for details on major journal cancellations. Last updated April 2009.
Major engineering databases, journals (electronic and print), and electronic books are in the collection. Subscription renewals are based on use statistics and consultation with faculty. The Engineering Library website conveniently links to the resources used most frequently by the Cornell engineering community. See Databases by Discipline, Library Catalog, and the eBooks links. Electronic journals are favored over print, and many paper subscriptions have been cancelled, since it is not possible to afford both formats. Ejournals may be found on the Library Gateway.
The library purchases textbooks requested by faculty, especially for course reserves. The primary language of the collection is English. Materials in other languages are acquired as appropriate. This is often the case for geological science material.
Collections are tailored to research and teaching currently underway at Cornell. Subject emphases are re-evaluated when priorities and faculty at the College of Engineering change.
See the gift policy for Cornell University Library's policy on gifts.
Liaisons rely on publisher approval plans, discussions with faculty, and requests to build the collection. Highlights include:
- Databases - INSPEC, IEEE xplore, Compendex, Web of Science, SciFinder Scholar, GeoRef, and many more.
- eBooks - Knovel, Safari Books online, Books24x7. We receive all the printed books as well as ebooks (last 3 years) from Safari, which provides the computer science O'Reilly series. Computer software is not collected for public use. Monographs containing information on CD are collected and loaned from the circulation desk.
- Educational DVDs - are purchased upon request. They are kept behind the circulation desk. Publishers include Discovery Channel, NOVA, National Science Foundation, Insight Media. Titles include Mechanical Universe, Connections, and Best Mind Since Einstein (Richard Feynman).
-
Publishers - approval plans with Springer, Academic, university presses, and others as well as major scientific and engineering societies (see next paragraph)
-
Societies - Standing orders for all publications from major scientific and engineering societies such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, Association for Computing Machinery, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Geophysical Union, and Geological Society of America. As prices rise, we have had to stop subscriptions to some societies, such as Society of Automotive Engineers and Society of Photo-Optical and Instrumentation Engineers, but will buy individual items on demand and include them in the collection. Request them by emailing engranswers@cornell.edu.
-
Technical Reports - the library moved its collection of 2 million microfiche to the library annex. These reports are from agencies such as Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and other U.S. government agencies and their contractors. Newer reports are online; older ones may be requested from the library annex.
-
Patents - Google patents has U.S. patents and patent applications. Patent Lens has foreign and U.S. patents and patent applications.
-
Standards - electronic IEEE standards are included with IEEE xplore. Historical ASTM standards are kept in print. We buy standards on demand and retain them in the collection.
-
eCommons - faculty are encouraged to upload their research papers into the university's digital archive, eCommons. This preserves their publications, makes it more accessible and findable on the Internet, and encourages copyright management. See Sherpa/Romeo by publisher or journal title to see which format you're allowed to publish (usually the post-print, referred version).
-
Copyright Management - see the following sites for help with managing one's copyright and copyright at Cornell.
Coordination and Cooperation
The interdisciplinary nature of teaching and research means students and faculty will find themselves using other Cornell libraries. Libraries and their subject focus includes:
Engineering Library for engineering, computing and information science, and geological sciences;
Fine Arts Library for architecture, city planning, and environmental design;
Management Library for business, economics, and management science;
Mann Library for biology, biotechnology, vertebrate paleontology, nutrition, food science, and textiles;
Mathematics Library for pure and applied mathematics, statistics, differential equations, geometry, algebra, and numerical analysis;
Olin Library for social sciences, law, history of science, and maps, which includes geological and topographical maps;
Physical Sciences Library for astronomy, physics, and chemistry;
Veterinary Library for biomedical sciences;
Weill Medical for medical and biomedical sciences.
For a directory of Cornell researchers and their areas of expertise, see VIVO.
