Cornell Library Home Page - www.library.cornell.edu
When Cornell University opened in 1868 the library was housed in Morrill, then McGraw Hall. The first university library was built in 1892 (Uris Library, designed by William Henry Miller. It includes a bell tower that is a familiar symbol of Cornell.) The Engineering Library was originally in Sibley Hall and came to Carpenter Hall when it was built in 1957. There are now 20 libraries at Cornell, see library gateway/individual libraries. With 7 million volumes and 26,000 electronic journals, Cornell is ranked among the top 10 research libraries in the country.

Digital Collections - The Library has digital collections as well as print collections. See sample below.

crank undefined
The Crank is a student engineering journal from 1880s-1890. From the Cornell Library of Historical Monographs. A circular plate rolling on a cone model from the KMODDL collection

KMODDL - KMODDL is a collection of mechanical models for teaching the principles of kinematics--the geometry of pure motion. The core of KMODDL is the Reuleaux Collection of Mechanisms and Machines, an important collection of 19th-century machine elements held by Cornell's Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Demonstrate with searching for a spiral pump. Display movie.

Exercise - Look for a kinematic model that with an intemittent mechanism. Where was this technology used?

Cornell Daily Sun is available back to 1880 at http://iarchives.library.cornell.edu/. Current issues are at http://www.cornellsun.com/. Show how to find a news item on lake source cooling. Can you find the article on "not enough water for Cornell's hydroelectric power plant? What year was the power plant built?

DSPACE - Cornell University's digital repository of scholarly information. Demonstrate engineering education for a article on the history of engineering at Cornell. It's located in the publication Cornell Engineering Quarterly, a good source of information about the college. Can you find an article on the Sundial, which was built in the middle of the engineering quad?

Patent Searching - Cornell has many important inventors, including Wilson Greatbatch (implantable pacemaker), Willis Carrier (air conditioning), Robert S. Langer (biomedical applications of polymers), and Leroy Grumman. Several Cornell inventors have been elected Cornell entrepeneur of the year at http://epe.cornell.edu. Search MicroPatent in the Library Catalog and demonstrate a Thomas Edison search. Ezra Cornell is an inventor as well as a founder of Cornell University. Using MicroPatent, what did he invent in 1844?

What invention is Leroy Grumman known for?

Tip - In MicroPatent, search inventor names like this example: hawkins_jeffrey_c* unless you are searching pre-1971 patents, then search in large box only - thomas near3 edison. Make sure you have the proper dates selected.

Engineering Information Competencies

We cover the following 5 competencies, which are necessary for all engineering students to become skilled in library research. At the end will be a Tiltmeter game, which tests your knowledge.
  1. Find the book Primer of Biomechanics by George Lucas in the online catalog (http://catalog.library.cornell.edu). Display long view to see subject headings.
  2. Find the journal IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering in the online catalog and/or e-Journal Titles list (link from URL above). Drill down to an individual article.
  3. Determine which online database to use for a topic after consulting Databases by Discipline (ex. of hybrid vehicles)
  4. Use an online database (such as Applied Science and Technology Abstracts, INSPEC) to find appropriate articles. (hybrid vehicles)
  5. Locate the full text of an article found from an technical database (in #4 above).
  6. Tiltometer Game: Test Your Knowledge (from University of Texas System Digital Library)
