Find a job in 5 steps
- Engineering Co-op and Career Services offer workshops on resume writing, interview techniques, and manage on-campus recruiting. Their website has a lot of useful information, including salary surveys of previous graduates. They are located in 201 Carpenter Hall, phone 607 255-5006. Open weekdays: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, email eng-career@cornell.edu.
- Create a profile in CornellTrak so you can receive notices about job postings, graduate schools, interviews, etc.
Step Two - Locate Job Listings
- CareerSearch is a database of a million companies. If you have a specific criteria in mind, such as geographic location, size of firm, or annual sales, it allows a user to compile a list of companies based on these variables.
- Society and Commercial Sites - If you know which company you want to work for, check their website for advertised openings. To browse for many places, check society web pages, such as the IEEE, ASCE, ASME, etc and commercial web career sites. The URLs for many of these is in the section Web Career Services and Engineering Societies. Don't hesitate to use Google as well.
-
Current Journals in your subject discipline will publish "positions available" in the back of the issues and on the web.
-
Networking - Another good place to look for jobs is by networking at professional conferences. Contact your engineering society to find out when the next conference meets. If you don't know which society to contact, consult the International Directory of Engineering Societies, Ref Directory TA1 .E37) and look at the subject index.
Step Three - Research the Company's Profile
Before going to an interview, it is vital that your research the company first. Consult:
- Company's Website - Research an employer's web site for history, competitors, products, services, locations, size, backgrounds of key people, and recent developments.
- Hoover's Online - Use Hoover's Online to find product/brand name listings, competitors, officer names and salaries, product segmentation data, subsidiaries, and financial data, including access to annual reports and SEC filings. Hoover's Online also profiles industries and has an IPO watch calendar. Database includes 12 million companies, with in-depth coverage of 40,000 of the world's top business enterprises.
- If your company is privately held, you may not be able to locate them in Hoovers. Consult the Management Library's Library and Internet Resources for Superior Job Searches.
Step Four - Find Recent Articles on the Company
Has this company been in the news? What is it like to work there? These database should help answer these questions.
-
Factiva - 8000 journals and newspapers (including Wall Street Journal), most in full-text
-
Proquest Direct - contains academic and popular business articles, also newspapers, 60-70% of them are in full-text or PDF
-
Lexis Nexis Academic Universe - full-text articles from newspapers, business, and technical trade magazines, as well as wires, transcripts, and legal information.
-
Webfeet.com - Insider's guide to what the culture of the company is like. Includes interviewees with interviewers, hiring and salaries figures.
-
Vault Reports - insiders guide with frank views about specific companies.
Step Five - Research the Industry
What is the state of the industry? Who are your company's competitors? Use these databases next.
- Market Insight - includes Standard & Poor's industry overviews, stock reports, news stories, financial information
