You are here: ASTech > Engineering Library > Find > mse307 407 Find It! is a new way of searching many databases at once. You can find this link at the top of the Library Gateway. Enter your search terms and select database categories, such as engineering. Your search result will include references from many databases, with links to some full-text articles and the library catalog when applicable. Not all databases are included. Patent Searching -
Google Patents - easy and quick way to search for U.S. patents by inventor, number, or keywords - it does not contains foreign patents, patent applications, nor complete results for some searches, but is a convenient place for finding a few patents on a topic and for patent number searching. Older patents (pre-1976) have spelling errors from optical character recognition. -
MicroPatent - MicroPatent includes PDFs of US and foreign patents. Also patent applications. Older patents (pre-1971) have spelling errors from optical character recognition. See Guide to Using MicroPatent. - SciFinder Scholar (see listing under Database of Scholarly Journals) indexes chemical patents as well as the chemical research literature.
Company and Industry Information Databases of Trade Journals and Newspapers Databases have immediate coverage to some journals and a 4-8 week lag time on other journals, due to publisher restrictions. The library has paper copies of some of these journals. The Management Library has a good table comparing the top business databases. - Business & Company Resource Center - company profile, histories, and articles grouped by area, such as legal issues, management, operations and technology, sales and marketing, and strategy and planning.
- Business Source Premier - Abstracts for 3,010 business scholarly and trade journals and cumulative full text for over 2,470 journals.
- Hoovers - find company descriptions, competitors, officer names, and financial data.
- Proquest Direct - abstract and full-text international business database to 800 professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines. Articles contain images as well as text.
- LexisNexis Academic Universe - Best known for full-text to the New York Times, LexisNexis provides access to full text newspapers, TV and radio transcripts, business and financial magazines, company directories, laws, legal cases, and regulations.
- MarketInsight- Contains Standard & Poor's Industrial Surveys, which provide industry profiles, trends, and statistics. Go to the Industry button, search on industry, click GO, then select S & P Industry surveys on left.
- Factiva - mostly full-text (no images) international business database to newspapers and trade journal, including the Wall Street Journal. More difficult to use than Proquest.
- Databases by Discipline from the Engineering Library web page lists many databases by subject
Selected databases include: - Applied Science and Technology Abstracts - Cornell has most journals
- Cambridge Scientific Abstracts - includes Materials Science Abstracts, Ceramics Abstracts, Advanced Polymers Abstracts, Metadex, and Composites Abstracts.
- Compendex - automotive, mechanical, chemical, civil, biomedical engineering
- Google Scholar - a google search that is restricted to scholarly articles only. May not be current and doesn't cover all journals. A quick way to find some articles and if Cornell subscribes, a full-text link may be available.
- IEEE Xplore - full text of IEEE journals, magazines, and conference proceedings
- INSPEC - physics, electronics, computer science, materials science
- SciFinder Scholar (Chemical Abstracts) - Covers chemical literature and chemical patents.
- see also Engineering Research Guides
- ILI Standards Database - index to standards worldwide, with information on ordering. This is not a full-text database. The library has some standards and we order standards on demand. Email engrref@cornell.edu.
- ASTM Standards are on the first floor, Reference area, call number TA401 .A51 (south side). Back issues are in the Annex Library.
- Knovel - online reference handbooks covering chemistry and chemical engineering, plastics and rubbers, semiconductors, advanced materials, and safety, health and hygiene.
- Books24x7 - Books on many information technology topics, including networking, programming, languages, and desktop applications.
- Safari Books Online - Books published by O'Reilly for programmers and IT professionals. Covers the last three years only. We also get in these books in print.
